Phage Therapy:
Bacteriophage are viruses that are able to infect bacterial cell and destroy it (see picture below).

Bacteriophages have been used for therapeutic applications since their discovery at the beginning of 20th century. Forgotten by the western world from the moment of discovery of penicillin and rapid development of antibiotic pharmacy, bacteriophages as clinical agents were saved in Poland and countries of former Soviet Block. Nowadays, when contemporary medicine has to face tremendous problem of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections, bacteriophage therapy seems to be interesting alternaltive for this popular medicines, and centres of this experimental treatment are more often frequently visited by patients from different parts of the world. Although bacteriophage therapy seems to be effective, there are still some questions about this method of threatment that need to be answered...
The major phage-therapy centres is in Institute of Immunogy and Experimental Therapy of Polish Academy of Sciences in Wroclaw, Poland. This centre, not only cures patients from all over the world using bacteriophage preparations, but also investigates the biology of these viruses and their interactions with mammalian cells and tissues.
